1. Click on the chain link icon in the menu bar.
2. In the 'link text' box, type the words you want to appear to the reader.
3. Below that, click the box to open in a new tab
4. Then click new web site. This will open another box so that you can paste in the URL of the new site.
5. Links to sites outside the HCLE wiki display a green arrow but they don't indicate whether or not they will open in a new tab.
When copying a document onto a wiki page
When you upload a text file to the wiki it does not display automatically. Sometimes you have to copy and paste the text directly onto the wiki page. If there are links to other web sites these will open in the window that was displaying the HCLE wiki. The reader is likely to lose his or her place. Instead follow the procedure below to force the link to open a new browser tab leaving your HCLE wiki page untouched.
1. Open the document you want to display2. Use control A to select all characters in the document3. Go to the wiki page you want to edit, click the edit button and position your cursor where you want the paste to start.4. Control V to paste.5. Here's the tricky part. I want any links to open in a new tab and leave the tab that displays the HCLE material untouched. To do this, click on the '...' box to the right of the edit box. Then choose wiki text editor. This gives you the HTML code instead of the WYSIWYG editor. search for each instance of 'http:' in your new text and replace it with '@http:' . This make the new tabs.
Best to test it out on your own page to make sure you know how to do it. I'd like you to use this method whenever you are making wiki pages that cite other web sites. If you are writing new text using the WYSYWYG editor and the link icon you will get the same code by checking the 'open in a new tab' option. You only have to use the method in #5. when you are copying text onto a page.
